- Best time to visit: January to March and June to October, the two driest windows
- Getting there: Fly to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) near Arusha and Moshi, or drive from Nairobi via Namanga
Mount Kilimanjaro, at 5,895 metres, is Africa’s highest peak and the world’s tallest free-standing mountain. You do not need technical climbing skills to reach Uhuru Peak, but you do need preparation, a suitable route and a good guide team, because altitude affects everyone.
Choosing a route
- Machame (7 days): scenic, popular and well suited to acclimatisation thanks to the “climb high, sleep low” profile.
- Longer routes: give a higher summit success rate because your body has more time to adjust.
- Shorter routes: often rush acclimatisation, so we advise caution.
Climate zones
You walk through rainforest, heath, moorland, alpine desert and finally the glacial summit zone, so pack for everything from humid warmth to freezing nights.
Best time to climb
January to March and June to October are the best periods. Rains are heaviest in April and May, and short rains arrive in November.
